Name: Shiane
Age: Eighteen Turns
Rank: Candidate
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Hetero
Looks: Shiane has locks the colour of raven feathers decorate her head. Straight locks curl about her heart-shaped face with an almost playful look to them, Shiane's hair always looks neat. No matter what she's done, what activities she may have done to mess up her hair. It always looks stylish, like it's meant to be neat and lovely. Glossy and healthy looking the silken strands seem to be the only thing that actually looks like its healthy. Her hair just brushes her shoulders, maybe an inch over. Though her fringe is about that same length and it seems to always be covering half of her face, like she's attempting to hide.
Almond shaped, and a bright vibrant emerald green, Shiane's eyes are possibly the best feature she has. The dark green pure and unchanging, lighting up with amusement or seeming to grow icy with anger never does the shade actually change. Shiane's eyes always seem to be tired, exhausted, like living is a constant battle she must fight that drains on her energy. The same dark, thick lashes frame Shiane's eyes, though somehow, hers give her a slightly dreamy look. Lit with innocence and honesty, Shiane's eyes are the one thing that will give her emotion away when her features do not.
Her skin, inherited from her late mother is always pale. No matter how much time under Rukbat's harsh glare is spent, she never tans. Though does have a tendency to burn, causing her skin to go read and sting quite a bit. After a while, the red fades and her skin is pale again. The shade of her skin appears almost deathly, the only life coming when she blushes or burns from Rukbat's rays, the heat flushing her cheeks or arms and lighting a sparkle in her eyes. Her slim figure seems to melt into the background, hiding behind Aaria's shadow. It would seem at first glance that a light breeze would snap Shiane in two, such is the fragile appearance of her lack of muscles. There is absolutely nothing intimidating or menacing about Shiane, in fact the sickly looking girl almost reminds one of a lost herd beast. Or possible a Watch-Wher caught in sunlight, just from the way she reacts to people with wide eyes and a frightened demeanor. Shiane couldn't be called the most curvy girl on Pern, but nor is she flat-chested in any way. She's... Caught between the two really, average. Her body always seems to be shaking, whether it be from cold, exhaustion, or fear has not been whittled down yet. Mostly, only the shaking of her hands can be seen, as the rest isn't very noticeable.
Her facial features have the same fragile appearance as her body does, as though waiting for Faranth herself to come down and punish her. The same brush of innocence that lies upon her sister's features is far more prominent on hers, making her look younger than her eightteen turns. Emotions are always written clearly across her delicate face, there's no hiding the passions that lurk beneath her exterior. The smile that curves full, pale lips is always cautious, rarely given to anyone but those she trusts. Shiane has rarely spoken once since the incident with the water on the beach, when she does speak, her voice is soft, uncertain, innocent.
Personality: With Shiane, what you see is what you get. There's no hidden layers waiting to be unwrapped, the instant she's met it's the true Shiane. Shiane is very optimistic, every thing is brighter, she's fairly happy and can manage to find the light in what may seem like a pitch-black situation. This optimism often gets on people's nerves, even if it isn't Shiane voicing her thoughts.
Shiane hates arguments, and will not get involved in any sort of confrontation. At any sign of anger on anyone's face, or any tension in the air, Shiane is likely to flee. Much like a wild flitter, whom has been caught unawares by a human. Shiane prefers to sink into the back ground, prefers not to exist and keep to herself and her own company. Faranth only knows what might happen to her father if she dared step out of the square she'd built for herself, locking her into comfortable situations she was familiar with. Shiane is a sweet person to be around, she's honest and kind, thinking about others before she even begins to think about herself. This has come from her father's un-wavering devotion to her, from which also stemmed her affectionate side. The need to be held when she's feeling low, and the need for comfort when she's not well.
Shiane is shy. She's not likely to even show her face to a stranger until asked her to, finding meeting people far too nerve-racking. Her deepest fear lies in the crystal depths of water, after the accident Shiane developed the deep fear of the water. Preferring, if she can help it, not to go anywhere near it. Shiane will not talk, even when spoken to and will not stick up for herself. She will believe what she believes and they may have their own opinion, such as they are entitled to. A completely honest young woman with nothing dishonest ever brushing black wings on her mind, Shiane will never lie, even when that truth may get her in to trouble. Sweet and innocent, she takes everything to heart, whether it be insults, compliments or advice. Shiane listens, she doesn't just hear, and she cares.
History: Twins are unusual, very rare, such is how Pern is, and may always be. Had is not been for a brave mother's sacrifice and an experienced birthing women, one life on Pern may never have started. Early on in Sharla's pregnancy there was obviously something different, something setting her apart from many other pregnancies. The bulge in her stomach developed at a much faster rate, and there seemed times when her normal milestones were hit, and nothing had happened. Further on, months into the carrying of her children, there were times when Sharla was almost positive that movement came from both sides at once. Impossible, unless the child inside was larger than any before. On the day of their birth, the difficulties began. When Sharla first felt the pangs of pain rippling through her, she grew worried, scared that something was wrong. Though a long one, the labour was fairly normal. Sharla, and her husband Aerien, began to relax. Then the pains hit her once more, and it became apparent that Sharla had not been carrying one, but two babes inside her. The strain of birthing the second child was too much, Sharla was unable to cope with the physical pain she was being put through, and too much blood had been lost. It was save Sharla, or save the child. As every mother would, Sharla chose to save her child, as it were, teh older twin died only a few days later.
For turns, it was a normal family. Aerien did his best not to look at the younger twin with contempt, or hatred of a lost wife. A lost love that had owned his heart, as she grew, it was impossible. Even though he tended to his daughter with devotion due to her quietness, he found it grew harder and harder with each day, she was just a responsibility, not the joy he'd hoped to share with his wife. It seemed that Aerien raised runners, that's what he told his children, though didn't allow Shiane to help much. Putting his heart and soul into the work that helped him forget his pain for a while, and avoid his child. Then, it seemed disaster hadn't finished with the family.
Shiane's pale skin, her ability to bruise and easily get sick were all a mystery. The mystery lay in the fact that neither of her parents had ever suffered serious health problems, nor had they been subject to a weak immune system. The final blow to Shiane's health occurred on a day playing by the ocean, their father watching over them. The children were playing happily, building sand castles and finally getting into shove-war. They'd moved into shallower water, and Shiane was up to her shoulders in the water when a friend either pushed too hard, or she lost balance.
Icy water surrounded her as she met the ocean with an almost painful smack. A squeal of surprise and laughter was cut off as she toppled back wards, into the salty water. It was so cold! She hadn't realized it was really that cold, too busy playing with Lyna as she was. Salty water flew into her mouth as she gasped, struggling to get back to her feet. Cold. Freezing water. It was dark. So dark. Then arms grasped hers and lifted her from the water. Air flew to her lungs and she clung to her sister. Shiane could then recall the voice of Aerien soothing her, a blanket wrapped around her to dry her off. Lyna apologizing, over and over. After that, it was mostly a blur.
Shiane was continually sick for turns after this, and has never really recovered her health. Though Aerien knows Shiane's health might not get any better, he is even more clingy and the smaller girl isn't even allowed out of his sight. This didn't bother Shiane, as being with her father was never any chore that was pressed onto her. Though she suspected he was hoping, continually that she will get better and she'd be the same bright little girl she had been. If Shiane were to admit one good thing about the incident, it would be the way her father's hatred of Shiane changed to love.. She was chosen by a search dragon rather by surprise, the young green calling her over with a sweet voice and announcing that she was coming back to the weyr with them.
