This had been one of the more interesting days of Roasha's life. She had flown dragonback for the first time, gone between for the first time. Had seen the world as dragonriders see it...from above.
The rider had been very honest. They hoped that the queen, Azarith, would rise to mate soon. Once she did, they would need candidates for those dragons.
Until then, they needed workers. Roasha had spent two turns as a drudge. She was not afraid to do whatever work this new Weyr needed of her. If she Impressed, then she would have the skies.
If she didn't, then she knew she would probably be expected to do her share of bearing the next generation.
The place was huge, and empty-seeming. The barracks she found needed more people to fill them. "We need to recruit," she said, softly as she glanced around.
She had not imagined a dragon in her life, but found herself rather pleased with the idea.

Shiane usually liked this time of day, it was quiet and most others had decided to populate the beaches or the lake, something that was outdoors, not in. Where as Shiane liked being indoors, even better when it was rare that anyone actually came inside, so she only had to deal with people when they were ready to go abed for the night.
Not this time though, just as Shiane walked into the barracks, she realised someone else was there, and almost instantly, her eyes widened and she took a step back. Never one for conversation at the best of times, it was even worse for Shiane when she didn't know that person. Still, she wasn't going to get to know them if she didn't say something.
Swallowing hard, the slight girl stepped forward, trying to smile and managing on an intimidated expression as she approached her. "H-hello." Whoa, good start, she'd managed a greeting at least, why was the girl looking about like she was? Almost like she was sizing up the weyr, deciding where it's strengths and weaknesses were. How odd.
Another pause, before she finally did manage a smile, albeit a timid one as she extended her hand to the other girl. "I-I'm Shiane."

Roasha smiled softly and extended her own hand. "I'm Roasha, and I don't bite."
Shiane was clearly even shyer than she, Roasha, was. "Are you a candidate?" Of course, there were no eggs.
What if the odd colored queen didn't...Roasha thrust that thought out of her mind. There would be eggs, soon enough, and if she was lucky...probably a green dragon for her. She couldn't see herself as one of those rare female blueriders.

Smiling slightly at the comment about biting, Shiane was tempted to tell her it wasn't her fault, Shiane was like this with everyone, but she didn't. Clamping her lips together as they shook hands. "N-nice to m-meet you." She mumbled softly, blushing slightly at the question.
It might have been odd to others to get candidates before there were eggs, but Shiane felt that this was good, it showed they had faith in their queen. Nodding mutely, she smiled shakily. "Y-yes. T-they picked m-me out o-of the o-others." She said, shaking her head slightly, "I-I don't k-know why."
No she didn't know why they'd pick her of all people, it would be smart to pick people that were brave and bold, Shiane was neither, she was meek, quiet. How could any dragon want that? Really, it was just strange. Then again, the queen hadn't risen yet, so she had time. Lots of time.

Roasha nodded. "I bumped into a rider at Telgar, and while I wasn't in a -bad- situation there, I thought this might be a better one.
She paused and then shrugged. "I guess it's what the dragons look for. The rider said it was his -dragon- that sensed me, or whatever it is they do."
Should she admit to Shiane that she had been working as a drudge? Perhaps best not for now. "So...do you know your way around yet?"

Shiane smiled lightly at the girl, gaining a bit more confidence when she realised that Roasha was friendly. Or enough so that she wasn't biting Shiane's head off at every chance she got. "I-I guess I j-just wanted t-to see what t-the weyr was l-like." Shiane mumbled, almost inaudibly.
Smiling slightly again, Shiane gazed quietly at Roasha. She herself couldn't see why the dragons wouldn't pick her. From what she'd seen, Roasha wasn't afriad of change, she was intelligent, or Shiane thought so, and she wasn't quiet and shy... Or timid. She was fine talking... "I g-guess so. I w-wonder what they l-look for."
Did she know her way around? A little, not very much, Shiane tended to stay in the barracks alot. Only going down with the others for chores, meals or lessons. Shaking her head slightly, Shiane spoke softly. "N-not really. I-I know the b-barracks. Inside ou-out. T-that's a-about it. I-I know my way yo t-the kit-kitchens though." She smiled slightly, shrugging her shoulders as though it was no big deal.

"That's important," Roasha said in her soft voice. "And it's interesting...if awfully empty. I hope they can get more people to move here."
A dragon clutch would help, surely. It was not so much that Roasha did not think one would pick her, as that she could live without if she had to. She was one of those people who made her own happiness. "I'll work out how it compares to Telgar, later."
As long as some bronze or silver rider didn't think she would put out for him...she wasn't going to risk getting knocked up at this point. In a few Turns, maybe.

Andol had walked into the barracks and saw the two girls standing there talking. The surprise of seeing anyone there made him want to leave, but instead he decide to watch the talk. It was not a unusual thing for him to do to listen in to what people were talking about and most people had home who had caught him never said anything because they knew he would not tell. He never spoke to anyone anyway. He was holding Iron to his chest and had squeezed him a bit to relax himself and to feel the firelizards assuring presence against his chest. He looked down at Iron into his reassuring gaze and then looked back up and hoped that they would not see him standing there.

Shiane shrugged slightly, unsure what to say. Most other candidates would know their way about by now, not Shiane, her preference for keeping top herself put a damper on the places she went "I-I'm sure they'll bri-bring more people whe-when Azarith fl-flys and clutch-clutches."
Personally, Shiane didn't want to be thinking about the effects flights had on everyone in the weyr, especially gold flights. Shiane wasn't weyr bred, she didn't know anything about flights or anything of the sort...
Looking up, Shiane was startled to see a boy standing there, and she instantly stepped back, though raised a hand in a tiny wave. She would say no more though, it seemed to her that he didn't want to be seen.

Roasha got the same impression. She tried to focus on Shiane. "More people will be willing to come when there are actual eggs to count, I suppose." She stretched a little. "I didn't really...lose anything by coming here, and I'm willing to do whatever's needed."
That was as close as she was going to come. Andol was still in the corner of her vision. She tried on a reassuring smile. Weird...she seemed to be one of the more outgoing people here.

Andol stood there wondering if he should go speak to them. He held tigher to Iron and thought about it. They did not seem like very bad people. So he took a deep breath and slowly walked over to where they were. He was more scared every step he took when he reached them he just stood there. He then looked up at them and said in his stammering voice "H-ell-o my n-ame i-s An-dol."

Shiane's eyes widened when she saw the boy was as shy as she was, something that she definately wasn't used to. She was used to big, loud voices, nothing like what these two were like. Roasha was comfortable, she spoke clearly and without fear, but Andol, was like her. Trying to smile reassuringly like Roasha was, Shiane only managed the smallest, insecure twitch of her lips.
"Hi." One word without a stammer, Shiane glancing t her feet to gain confidence before looking up again, feeling that familliar drain of confidence. "I-I'm Shi- Shiane." She managed to mumble out before dropping her gaze again. Why did this always happen to her? Even whe n nice people spoke to her, she was almost scared of the lot of them. Why?
