The Beginning
What can be said? A.V.I.A.S was discovered, and all of a sudden, life on Pern was easier. Easier yes, but happier? Machines did every thing that was once the task of specialists, there was no longer that feeling of accomplishment when something went right, it was simply... The way things went. Thread disappeared, and suddenly, dragons were reduced to machines, simple transport, helpers on Pern. The numbers dwindled, their use leaving. Once, there would have been a time when the idea of no more dragons would have horrified every single person on Pern, now... The outcome seemed inevitable. Where once a few hundred had been thought of as too few to protect Pern, there were now only seventy-seven dragons and their riders... One Gold, growing old. When she clutched, there was no Gold egg, a small clutch. It seemed that the end of the time of the DragonRiders had finally come.
The eggs hatched, Greens, Blues... Lower ranked colours.. Many thought the smallest eggs were duds, but instead, they hatched. Their colours stood out far more than anything else. The first was a dark blue, the same colour as stormy oceans in the dead of night. She... He... It, held it's head high, refusing to be humbled as other odd colours hatched behind it. However, the last to hatch was the most interesting. Crumbling out of the egg, with soft, almost washed out colours of blue, purple, pinks.. Tail flicked about as she ran past the stormy hued dragon, creeling happily as her hide sparkled.
Mine! Mine! ZadariMine! Your Shytainaith has found you! Won't you please fed me MineLove?
The Change
The dragonets, seemed to grow quicker, however, what they lacked in size, and bulk, they made up for in speed, agility and intelligence. The dragons were far smarter than their cousins, with each new colour having a talent that they alone, could manage. Many Holders wished to know just how the new colours had come about, had those that continued to play with genetics and drugs finally done something with their knowledge? The knew Weyrlings grew, learned along side their cousins, and were disliked. What rider enjoyed the company of one who's dragon was so much smarter?
Shytainaith was one who would not be held down, her sweetness and playfulness made her easy to like, even if she hated to be told what to do. Like her rider, there was a rebellious streak a mile wide within her, and the fact that so many refused to believe that what they were seeing was a beginning of a new era, instead of the death of dragon kind.
I know that Thread hasn't returned, that Pern has nothing to fear... So why is it Shytainaith and I want nothing more than to be able to fight, to learn how to chew firestone, to know just how it works. They teach us nothing, and S'lan, formerly Sairylan, and I are growing impatient. We want to learn, what happens if Thread does come back, I doubt it, but one never knows. If I have to, I swear, I will leave this Weyr and try and get the others to follow. We'll become our own Weyr, and hopefully, in time, we will be respected like those who ride the original coloured Dragons.
Diary of Zadari, rider of Shytainaith. Two months after Impression.
I know now what's going on! The dragon riders have accepted that their time is over! Can't they see? Are they blinded by self-misery that they can't see what's happening? Pern can't survive like this, I don't think it can. Things that were so sacred, are forgotten. Only one seven-day ago, dragonriders fought! Their dragons nearly flamed each other over the spat. Dragons do not fight! What is happening oh my beloved Pern? Don't you have an answer for us?
Diary of Zadari, rider of Shytainaith. Four months after Impression.
I've made my mind up. I don't care if the others come, I'm leaving Ista Weyr. I'll return to one of the forgotten Weyrs, maybe even go to the long empty Southern. I don't know yet, I do know that the name will change. I'm not going to give in, Shytainaith and I will leave, without a Queen or a Weyrwoman to lead us, we don't need anyone! The time of the dragonriders is not over! I refuse to believe it, a new era dawns, and I hope. Oh I hope we can change Pern.
Diary of Zadari, rider of Shytainaith. Six months after Impression.
In the darkness, they left, the new colours looking to the smallest of them to lead them. Fort was the first Weyr formed, and perhaps that was why it was found right to go there. For where better to start again, than at the beginning? The dragons seemed to settle well, the Weyr becoming their new home. Aalasser Weyr, a new beginning for all. Many moved from Ista, to Aalasser, thsoe who believed there was something to fight for, something to believe in. Those that wanted a change. The dragons were only a turn old when Thread's menace returned. Just as they had feared, and for the first time since their birth, the originals and the new, flew together. Fighting Thread, and losing many. Even so, there was no alliance formed between the Weyr's, and aside from the fighting of Thread, each ignored the other.
Two Weyrs, one going back to the beginning, renewing tradition, the Holds under their care doing away with machines as they were bid. While Ista embraced the knowledge brought to them by A.V.I.A.S. Even with the Weyrs so different, there was no hostility between them, but how long can a fragile peace last?
