Behold: Araelen Weyr
Plot/Story: In the Interval shortly after the 11th Pass of Thread, there remained only one Weyr in the Southern Continent. The scourge was still falling, though the Passes gradually grew shorter and the Intervals between lasted longer--thanks to the Aivas-caused, slowly shifting orbit of the Red Star away from Pern. Called Artemis Moonlight Weyr, it was the last of the dragon homes on Pern, the remaining establishment after a deadly plague swept the world and killed off Holders and Dragonriders alike. The Northern Continent had been all but abandoned, but the Southern Continent was beginning to proliferate under the careful guidance of the various Lord Holders there. The dragons, on the other hand, were few in number and seemed to be deteriorating, a sign that Thread’s threat to the planet was diminishing.
The old queen wherein laid her first golden egg when her own time was coming slowly to a close. The young woman, Sitareh, who Impressed the newly Hatched queen, Aviciath, was driven by a desire for power. She recognized quickly the growing discomfiture of the Lord Holders with the continuing dragon presence despite the lack of Thread, and with it uncertainty that Thread would ever fall again. Eager to establish a world in which Dragonriders ruled, with her as the sole Weyrwoman and ultimate power, she created the ambitious plan to leap between forward in time to the next Pass. There, she would be the only goldrider in a world where she could create the rules.
Proceeding with this plan, the Junior Weyrwoman approached the younger, more impressionable riders of her Weyr, especially those who had Impressed bronzes. She enticed them to join her in her untoward leap, whispering promises of power to gain their loyalty in her venture. Many who had also noticed the growing resentment of the Lord Holders and were bored by the Turns without Thread were eager for the adventure she offered. The word was carefully circulated, passed only to trustworthy ears, and the number of followers grew, without the knowledge of the Weyrleader or his Weyrwoman.
If this plan was going to succeed, there had to be no record of its existence. The Harpers, if they knew, would most certainly write Teaching Songs to warn their descendants of the conniving Dragonriders. The Weyrleader, Weyrwoman, and their loyal followers would attempt to stop the rebels. Thus, the Junior Weyrwoman knew that she must create a believable reason for her disappearance, or the whole of Pern would be searching for her, even through time. Informing the bronze riders who would follow her forward of her plan, the Gold Rider took a daring, 50 year leap between time. The gap was long enough that when those bronzes following the plan bugled the passing of one of their own, the other dragons believed it must be so. The Junior Weyrwoman was mourned as dead.
Following the stars, Sitareh continued forward in time in smaller jumps until she came upon a Turn in which the Red Star was illuminated in the Eye Stone. Her fire lizard daringly delivered the coordinates on his own, and the other dragonriders gradually began to follow suit. Their disappearances were sporadic and often unexplained, though it was assumed that these were mainly riders who wished to live off on their own now that the Pass had ended. Due to the inability of Star Charts to pinpoint an exact day for the dragonriders to follow, the followers trickled in over a matter of weeks, even months, to join their Junior Weyrwoman in a future Pern.
The old queen died without producing another gold egg, and it was widely assumed by the common folk that this represented a complete end of Thread. The dragons would not have died out if the threat still existed, the people believed, so the Teaching Songs of Thread and dragons transformed to become Histories of a time now past. In the centuries that followed, the Holds prospered and a new hierarchy was established on Pern. Harpers were mainly storytellers and entertainers, though they still had teaching purposes, and Lord Holders bickered amiably over land and subjects. A peace and co-existence long absent on the world ensued.
These days were shattered but a Turn before the 12th Pass arrived. The gold rider and her followers arrived unexpectedly in this future Pern. The early days were exciting, as Sitareh, unwilling to re-open the long empty Artemis Moonlight Weyr, scouted for a new, suitable location for a Weyr. She soon discovered a promising volcano crater off the Eastern coast of the Southern Continent, part of a long chain of what had been active volcanoes in her time. The island created by this volcano was somewhat separate from the rest, a mere 100 dragonlengths from the shore of the Continent, and flourishing with all manner of flora and fauna. The volcano had obviously been inactive for a century or more, so the Weyrwoman, finding it suitably hollowed with caves for weyrs, pronounced it Araelen Weyr.
The ambitions of this new Weyrwoman and her eager, loyal bronze riders were soon to come into conflict with the comfortable norm that had existed for so long in the Southern Continent. At first, the people were astounded to see dragons once again in their skies, and they became too caught up in this excitement to notice the fist closing about their throats. Suddenly, the manner of these riders, seemingly risen from the dead, intimidated the people. Rumors began flying that if the dragons had returned, Thread would be soon to follow The Holds had expanded haphazardly in lush, green areas that one Weyr couldn’t possibly protect, even with the numerous grub life across the continent. Relations soon deteriorated as the Lord Holders, Crafters, and ordinary folk began to realize the extent of the demands now placed on them by the dictators whose protection could not be denied. Some of the Weyr's dragonriders also became discontented with the practices of their Weyrleaders, resulting in the formation of a quiet Rebellion. It was most certainly the beginning of a new Era on Pern.
